UPDATE 11 december 2011

New revisions 2.4 compatible sIBL sets now available at HDRLabs archive page. You (still) are allowed to use the Bunker sIBL sets commercially..so have fun with them!

Donated the Bunker sIBL sets to HDRLabs. The Bunkers sIBL sets / Panorama’s were choosen as SIBL sets of the month june 2010 at the HDRLabs website.

The Bunker sIBL’s are not in the Monthly sIBL set of the month section anymore but you still can download them for free here

And be sure to check the other stuff on this entry on the HDRlabs website… lots of nice new info and even other new sIBL sets made by Alex Hart

About

Here is a brand new HDRI project. The article is abit long so devided it into 3 parts: Intro Part 1, the panorama’s, Intro Part 2, and some technical explanations. By the way this Bunker project is part of another project called “The Scheveningen 360° project”.

Intro part 1

During the renovation of the boulevard in Scheveningen The Netherlands they discovered a Dutch Bunker (type S3 Kazemat) from before the 2e World War. During the 2th World War the Germans build  a extension to the Dutch Bunker. The Bunker complex could not (regardly) stay there so they decided to partly destroy it forever.  The Dutch bunker is being moved to a museum (more info about below – please be patient there are some nice images that will show the transpart of the Dutch bunker). The German part of the bunker complex is destroyed forever so these are the last panoramic pictures (maybe even the first?) of the German bunker because it is already been destroyed. More information scoll to below the images. So first start with the HDRI panorama images because know that most human beings on this planet are not patient enough to read lots of text. In the case you want to know more in depth info about the bunker scroll to the bottom off this page.

Info Bunker 01

This is the Dutch S3 Kazemat bunker from the inside. The only light came through the 3 small windows in the wall off the Bunker. This part is now removed from the Scheveningen beach and has been transported to the Genie Museum in Vught. More details about that transport look at the lower part of this page. Does anyone know when the mysterious drawing on the wall was made? I guess it must be made just after the second world war.

Info about Bunker part 2
This is the German part of the Bunker. It was build in the second world war and was together with the Dutch S3 Kazemat part of the Hitler’s Atlanticwall. This part of the bunker complex is gone now (forever).

Info Bunker 05

This is a HDRI group portrait of the volunteers form the Stichting Atlanticwall Museum Scheveningen. They are standing on top of the Dutch S3 Kazemat bunker. Making such HDRI panorama portrait is always exiting because the people have to still still for about 1 minute.  It can be ruined easily if some one moves during the capturing of the 63 images that are needed to make the panorama (as you can see the group did listen very well 😉 ) .The S3 Kazemat bunker is now in the Genie Museum in Vught.. The other parts of the  bunker complex are gone now (forever).
This portrait is also part of another project called (close) Encounter.

My good friend JP van der Burg did the color correction for the group portrait panorama.

Intro part 2

How things started on this project:
Saw an article mentioning the discovery of the bunker complex in the Scheveningsche Courant (& other media) and had the idea of making HDRI panorama’s within the bunker. So contacted the volunteers of the Stichting Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen to ask for permission to go in my own in the bunker complex before the public will go inside. Glad they responded quickly and arranged a meeting on Saturday 17 April morning about 08:30. Around 09:10 finally could go inside the bunkers to shoot 4 HDRI panorama’s. The light within the bunkers was amazing. The power of HDRI photography is that you even can shoot in very badly lighting conditions. After shooting the 4 panorama’s went outside and made a group HDRI panorama off all volunteers ( some aren’t on it because they were busy) so asked the to go on the top of the Dutch S3 Kazemat bunker. Big thanks to the  Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen for their help! P.s.I will donate these panorama’s to the Stichting Atlantikwall Scheveningen.

The Bunker in the media

Important: all scans, images & video below are not made by me so the copyright belongs to the makers.

Collected several interesting websites and articles so you can see more information about the Bunker discovery.

Several items were published in The Scheveningse Courant: “Bunker open to public” & the other one “Great interest Boulevard bunker” . Also you see an article from the Telegraaf. And another one in de Scheveningsche Courant.

On this side you can see the whole story and some nice photo’s and discussions about the discovery of the Bunker. Here is a translated version of that site

Next you find some impression from other photographers who made photo’s on the Bunker opening day: A, B, C (C translated into English)

Here are some nice pictures how they cut the Bunker into pieces before the transport to Vught

Some more pictures from the website Westonline

And the NOS made a item on this subject.

Technical Stuff

Used for this project several tools for the tonemapping / exposure blending part to make the panorama’s. Photomatix, PTGUI Pro, HDR Photostudio, Bracketeer & off course some Photoshop/Lightroom.  It depends on the HDR witch tonemapper/ exposure blender I use. Most of the time use Photomatix (gives the most satisfying results) sometimes the Tonemapper of PTGUI Pro and now started to work more with – HDR Photostudio – it has some advantages the most important is that you can edit in  32 bits ! Have also FDR Tools in my arsenal but for some reason cannot get an grip on that tool. Some times use combined techniques so a tone map with an exposure blend.

Also have to mention that the color style of the panorama’s is my personal interpretation.

It took about 160 hours to finish this project. It took so long because still doing some new experimenting with the HDRI workflow. The finished project folder is about 120 gig big (yes need to clean it up and make some clever backups). Shooting a HDRI panorama is pretty easy, the most of the time is needed for post processing the HDRI images. Its not a one push on the button technique. That makes HDRI photography so fun to do! Its always a great adventure to figure it out.
