ULTRA2012

[update 30 december 2011]

Article in the NRC (Dutch newspaper)

ULTRA and ULTRA’s (short for Ultra Moderns) is the collective name for Dutch bands and artists who were part of the second experimental wave in the history of pop music (1979-1983), the ‘post-punk experimental pop, “in which musicians and artists global immediacy, energy and do-it-yourself philosophy of punk combined with ideas, methods and techniques often borrowed from avant-garde art, jazz, electronic and modern classical music.

From east to west to south to north, clockwise and counterclockwise, from Provo to post-punk avant-garde to pop squat. In March 2012, four nights ULTRA2012 place in Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

HDRI Panorama’s

There were several changes in the members of the band but we kept it with 8 different settings.

Shot also a group HDRI panorama (with all the members in one panorama) but that needs some more attention due the fact it has some lighting problems. Will try to fix it, so when its ready will post it also on this page.

How the project started

When visiting my friend JP van der Burg we almost end late at night with the fine tunes of the Minny Pops. One day came back from a visit thought “lets mail the Minny Pops, perhaps they are liking the idea of making an HDRI panorama portret”. Very quickly after sending that mail got a mail back from Wally van Middendorp , where wrote that he liked the idea but was asking who I was….. so the ball started rolling. The fun part is that (I did not knew it before sending the first mail) that they were in the early planning of some new shows after a long time!

Technical information

The panorama portret all were shot in HDRI (9 exposures per angle – more info see lowest subject on this page called About the (close) Encounters project ).

The original RAW files from the camera were converted to 16 bit tiff files.

Below you can see a example angle 9 exposure.

Every angle exposures the merged into a HDR file with Photomatix. Next used PTGUI Pro to stitch the 7 HDR files into a spherical HDRI.

Those final HDR spherical panorama’s

JP van der Burg did the tonemapping with Photomatix & the final color correction & retouche with Photoshop. We choose for a “warm sunny ” look of the images.

Soon will post here a extra before & after color correction image, so you can see the difference.

The shoot

Here are some images shot before & after the shoot.

Before

The woman in the first image is my girlfriend and the tall guy in black is my best friend JP who did also the color correction! Also a first meeting picture with Wally van Middendorp who opens the door. The guy just had tasted a bit of a nice Belgium beer is Bob 🙂

After

Final words

Big thanks to the Minny Pops, JP van der Burg & Mireille

About the (close) Encounters project

This panorama is part of a bigger series (this is Part 10) that will be made in the future. Behind the scenes HDRI panorama portraits of people. More info about this project see at the bottom of this page. Not sure witch direction it will go.

This HDRI panorama portrait is one of a Dutch Electro pioneers band.

HDRI panorama portrait information:

This is a ongoing project and is called (close) Encounters.

The HDRI ( High Dynamic Range Images ) panorama portrait panorama’s are made out of 63 pictures (minimal 9 exposures per angle, 7 angles so 63 images are used to make a HDRI portret panorama.

That makes taking the image with some thrill — it could be ruined due to the fact that if the people are moving the portrait could fail. That idea makes it fascinating for me to do it, Its always exiting to shoot. Warn the customers in advance: “we will see in the final image who moved, so do not dare to move!” Until now (almost) everyone has listened very good in the portrait shoots from the last years.

After the shoot the most time consuming part starts: tonemapping, color correction & retouche. The actually shooting is done within 1 minute per pano, post production can take about 20 or 30 hours (or even more).

Update november 2015:

Last years the technical development of 360° camera’s (so no need to shoot in several angles but just push the button once) is going very quickly. More and more are entering the market and this is fantastic news. My special attention goes to the latest Lytro Immerge development. But have to be honest. For the (close) Encounters series not want to use such camera’s its just too easy. Its much more exciting if there is a bigger chance of failure. It reminds me also to the early days of (portrait) photography, can imagine the photographer shouted also “ please do not move”.
