Dutch Skies 360° HDRI - Project Info
This project started in 2008 and is ongoing.
The Dutch Skies 360° HDRI skies are already being used for 3D, Architecture, VR, VFX, Games, Movies and Advertisement productions ( you can find some examples in the Showcases in the top the navigation menu or just click here ).
The magic of capturing skies with clouds in all kinds of different weather moods is really something that gives a lot of energy/ideas. The location ( more about this please see below ) is ideal because the weather conditions in the town named Scheveningen can change very quickly so on some days can have multiple recording session and all skies can be all completely different. Capturing skies is also extremely addictive guess its a pretty healthy addition.
Highly possible you might have seen a game or movie where the Dutch Skies 360° HDRI are being used. In the showcases you can find several games and 1 movie . For the movies its a bit more difficult getting permission due to non disclosure's. Besides that for most productions not even aware for what its being used. The clients are of course not obligated to tell about it.
Since the start of the Dutch Skies project experienced lots of ( some were pretty crazy ) adventures with Film studios or VFX production companies.
Imagine going to a blockbuster movie here in the cinema in Scheveningen and seeing the skies being used and the captured sky is shot a couple of 100 meters form the cinema and...not allowed due to non-disclosures not allowed mention it. It sounds a bit awkward but in fact it isn't, this situation it stays a bit magically for me personally.
Dutch Skies 360° HDRI Skies recording location
The skies are always captured on the two spots:
The first 11k series ( more info please see below ) where captured on the old location until they decided to place a fence that stands close to the camera. The 19k series are all captured on the current location as shown in the image above.
You can visit the location yourself by clicking on the following link ( works the best when using the Chrome browser ): Dutch Skies 360° HDRI skies recording location Scheveningen Google Earth location.
Dutch Skies 360° HDRI Skies sizes
The Dutch Skies 360° HDRI skies are recorded in two sizes: 11k & 19k
First official sky that was sold in the online store was recorded on 12 December 2008 with a Nikon D300 & later the 11k's were captured with the Nikon D300s
The used lens was a Nikon 10.5 mm Fisheye and a 360° Precision panorama head.
Not capturing skies anymore with the Nikon D300 & Nikon D300s. Recorded with the Nikon D300 (s) more then 400.000 images. Both camera's still working, best robust camera ever bought.
Still to be explored RAW´S
Captured a huge amount - +/- 25 TB *) - of Dutch Skies 360° XL (19k HDRI ) skies, and still recording new ones. Most of them are never processed. About Autumn/Winter 2019 will announce more info about the plans regarding the the unfinished RAW's ( and some other announcements ).
Whats interesting to me personally is that the technical part is always under "investigation". New products are being tested in the "lab". In ( +/- ) November 2019 some more news will be published on this website.
Spend several years on creating Digital Dutch Skies 360° ( DD360 ) unfortunately had to put it in the fridge due way to long render times and several other reasons. Perhaps will launch a couple of Digital Dutch Skies 360°, those will most like created for experimental projects not sure yet.
Aware that currently a lot of game studios / film companies are already using completely digital environments / skies / clouds. With this in mind there are off course some very interesting A.I. technologies developing worldwide. In my opinion there will always be room for real HDRI recordings.
This project will keep me busy for a LONG time. Even if now would stop recording for sure can work on the current *) skies for at least 3 life's so now stop typing no time to waste!
